Doral, Florida aesthetic medicine professionals discuss microneedling and its benefits for skin.
What is Microneedling and Who Can Get It?
Throughout the ages people have used various methods to maintain their youth and beauty. Whether or not any of these methods worked is up for much debate, but the latest is skin treatments known as microneedling uses scientifically proven methods to improve skin and reduce the appearance of scars. Let’s discuss what exactly this procedure involves and whether or not it is right for you.
Microneedling: What it is and What it does
Though the term may bring up inaccurate pictures from 1990s horror films, microneedling is much less scary than that. Some others may conjure up pictures of acupuncture or dry needling, but neither of these is accurate either.
Microneedling uses a device that is hardly larger than a pen to make microscopic pricks in the deeper layers of the skin. This is interpreted by the body as an injury and it rushes to provide healing to the area. This healing involves collagen the body produces to make the skin more elastic. The skin has a plumper, more youthful look post procedure.
The Benefits of Microneedling
As you can imagine, microneedling has many applications since it does more than other treatments like microdermabrasion and does not use heat or lasers so it is safe for clients with darker skin tones.
Some of the skin conditions that microneedling treats are listed below.
- Acne scars
- Age spots
- Facial scars and other scars
- Enlarged pores
- Hyperpigmentation
- Stretch marks
- Uneven skin tone
- Wrinkles
Though results will not be immediate, these treatments (as there are usually multiple) can replace up to a year of lost collagen. Skin will continue to improve up to 6 or 8 weeks after the procedure is completed.
Side Effects and Safety of Microneedling
The question now may be, “Is microneedling painful?” or “Are there side effects?” Every medical procedure does come with a certain amount of risk although when it is done by a medical professional these are minimized.
The procedure does involve sticking a needle into your skin, but a topical anesthetic or analgesic will likely be used to reduce the discomfort. Some of the side effects involved are:
- Redness: This slight skin irritation is normal for a day or two after the procedure.
- Swelling: Slight puffiness is expected, but will go away quickly.
- Sun Sensitivity: Because the skin has been injured in a sense, it will be more sensitive to the sun. Sunscreen is vital post procedure if you are going to be outside.
- Skin Flaking: Dead skin may come off after the procedure.
Microneedling is a generally safe procedure, but there are some people who should not have it done. Immunosuppressed people should not have it done, due to a higher risk of infection. This includes people who are pregnant and nursing.
If you have a history of oral herpes, you may need special treatment prior to the procedure to ensure it does not spread. People who develop keloid scarring or have a collagen vascular disease should not have microneedling. Solutions are provided and a complete history of your skin will be made to help you determine what can be helpful for you.
