Botox is arguably the more well-known of the two neuromodulators. Botox has been approved for cosmetic use in the US since 2002. Since its introduction, it has been used safely and to great effect millions of times per year.

Botox and Dysport work by reducing neuronal activity in areas affected by lines and wrinkles. The active ingredients in these treatments stop nerve impulses to the facial muscles that are constantly contracting and stressing the structural proteins of the skin. 

This reduced activity reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles and also gives the skin a chance to produce more collagen and elastin to repair the damage from repetitive stress.

Compared to Dysport, Botox has a more potent active ingredient. This makes it great for deep lines with a small surface area.

Dysport is a neuromodulator that was developed similarly to Botox but was first introduced to the European market. In 2009, Dysport was approved by the FDA for use in the US.

The primary difference is that Dysport is more diluted than Botox.

Both Botox and Dysport work by being injected under the skin and they both contain the same active ingredient, namely botulinum toxin type A.

The diluted nature of Dysport makes it preferable for some applications. Being less concentrated, the active ingredient can more easily spread under the skin, affecting larger areas that are treated.

As an example, Dysport is often preferred for glabellar lines between the eyebrows. As far as cost is concerned, both brands are charged based on the active ingredient so the difference in cost between Botox and Dysport is minimal.

Once injected into specific facial areas, both Dysport and Botox induce temporary relaxation of facial muscles.

Facial muscles, therefore, reduce their ability to contract, dramatically reducing the skin folds and wrinkles caused by repetitive facial expressions.

Results typically last about 3 to 4 months and follow-up treatment may be applied once the effects wear off.
